Bridal Portraits: A Southern Tradition
If you’ve spent any time around weddings in the Deep South, you’ve probably heard the term “bridal session.” If you’re from somewhere else, there’s a good chance you haven’t—or maybe you’ve heard it and thought, wait… isn’t that what the wedding day is for?
That difference in perspective is exactly why bridal sessions are such an interesting (and valuable) tradition.
What Is a Bridal Session?
A bridal session is a dedicated photo shoot that happens before the wedding day, where the bride gets fully dressed—hair, makeup, dress, bouquet, the whole look—and we create portraits without the time pressure of the wedding timeline.
It’s not rushed. It’s not squeezed in between events. It’s intentional.
And in the South, especially places like Louisiana, it’s not just common, it’s expected.
A Southern Staple
In much of the Deep South, bridal portraits are part of the culture. They’re treated as an extension of the wedding itself, not an optional add-on.
When I lived in Louisiana, one of the most memorable traditions was how these images were used. Brides would select their favorite portrait from the session and have it printed large—sometimes very large—and displayed at the entrance of the reception. It’s often the first thing guests see when they walk in.
Even more unique, some brides would turn that print into a guest book. Instead of signing a traditional book, guests would leave notes directly around the image, creating something that’s both personal and visually striking.
It becomes more than a photo, it becomes part of the wedding experience.
Why Bridal Sessions Are Worth It
Even if you’re outside the South where this isn’t as common, bridal sessions offer some real advantages.
1. You get time back on your wedding day
Wedding timelines move fast. Having already created your bridal portraits means you’re not trying to carve out extra time while everything else is happening.
2. A stress-free environment
No guests waiting. No coordinator checking the clock. No pressure. It’s just you, your photographer, and the space to create something meaningful.
3. A trial run for your look
Hair, makeup, dress fit—this is your chance to see everything come together before the wedding day. If something needs adjusting, you’ll know ahead of time.
4. More creative freedom
We can choose locations, lighting, and timing that simply wouldn’t be possible on a wedding day. Whether that’s golden hour, a specific venue, or a more styled approach, you get flexibility.
5. A signature image to display
Whether you go full Southern tradition with a large reception print or keep it simple with framed portraits at your venue, you’ll have something polished and intentional to share with your guests.
Bridging the Gap
It’s interesting—bridal sessions are incredibly popular in one part of the country and almost unheard of in another. But once people see the results (and experience the difference), the value becomes obvious.
They’re not about doing more—they’re about doing it better.
If you want your wedding day to feel less rushed, your photos to feel more intentional, and your experience to feel more relaxed, a bridal session might be one of the smartest decisions you make.
And who knows—you might just start a Southern tradition of your own.
